30x30 c-prints edition of 7

In March of 2012, I was awarded an artist's residency by the United States National Park Service in southern California’s Joshua Tree National Park. While staying in the Park, I spent much of my time visiting the borderlands of the park and the areas where the low Sonoran desert meets the high Mojave desert. While hiking and driving, I caught glimpses of the border space created by the meeting of distinct ecosystems in juxtaposition, referred to as the Edge Effect in the ecological sciences. To document this unique confluence of terrains, I hiked out a large mirror and painter’s easel into the wilderness and captured opposing elements within the environment. Using a single visual plane, this series of images unifies the play of temporal phenomena, contrasts of color and texture, and natural interactions of the environment itself.

These images form an ongoing documentation of the evolving landscape within the old growth rain forests of Malaysian Borneo. This region represents one of the most biodiverse areas in the world, hosting a variety of endemic plant and animal species. Lacing through the lush vegetation, logging roads now segment the once dense forests, which are being cleared for the cultivation of enormous stands of oil palms. The oil produced from these palms is an extremely important economic commodity in Malaysia and elsewhere in the developing world. Traditionally used and exported as a food source, it is now being adopted as a biofuel, largely in response to demand for more renewable energy sources in the global North. The costs involved in the practice of producing and maintaining large scale monoculture are many: deforestation, habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, increased emission of greenhouse gases, and human rights violations. As such, this project attempts to raise questions about the possibilities of green energy and environmental progress in a globalizing and geographically uneven world.

As an addenda, the images included from Google Earth illustrate the unevenness of environmental costs in the region, as well as provide a counter-narrative to the Malaysian state’s evasion and omission of environmental damages as a result of oil palm cultivation.

As contentious debate on the impact of global warming drives on, something unique is occurring in the coastal areas of Alaska. Rather than rising sea levels and diminishing coastlines, the land in southeast Alaska is rising out of the ocean at an accelerated rate. This phenomenon is known as post-glacial rebound or isostatic adjustment, and is a direct result of global warming. The region was once covered by vast glaciers and ice fields, which massively deformed and submerged the coastal landscape. As global temperatures rise, the weight of glacial ice is rapidly melting away, and previously buried land is bursting forth into view.

This series is composed of photographs of the extant Alaskan landscape paired with photo-sculptural pieces representing the nascent landscapes to come. The photo-sculptural pieces were created through manipulating silver gelatin emulsion paper and sculpting it into rough approximations of the existing underwater topography. Dry chemistry was then applied directly to the emulsion and washed over with water; as the water flows around ridges and through valleys, it simulates trails and pools that are reminiscent of glaciers, glacial melt waters, silt deposits and the new risen muddy tidal flats.

This project serves as a reminder that the world often fails to conform to our polarized understanding of human-environmental interaction. As political battles rage over the possibility of coastal inundation, these pieces speak to the complexity of the natural world. The contrast of the potential topographies of the future with the natural landscapes of the present challenges the simplified arguments on both sides of the climate change debate. The pieces seek to expand the discourse, while grounding it in the concrete and complex reality of our Earth.

At over 12,000 feet above sea level in the arid highlands of southern Bolivia, exists an area where the crust of the salty earth presses into the dome of the sky. This high altitude gives rise to an inhospitable environment seemingly devoid of life. However, it is this very climate that exerts an ever-changing influence on the stark landscape and drives otherworldly life forms to adapt and thrive. Ultimately these elements coalesce to generate the surreal beauty found in this unique environment, one both rich in natural history and little understood.

Though recently this area has become increasingly visible to the world for underlying lithium deposits residing under the Salar de Uyuni or salt flats, which comprise a vast area of this landscape. It is estimated that these reserves comprise of 60-70% of the world’s store in lithium. We have the privilege now to see this place virtually undisturbed. How will the prospect of these resources manifest in the poorest country in South America and this endemic environment.

We, as humans, go to great lengths to satisfy our desire for a connection with the natural world, especially in our interactions with wild and exotic animals. Zoos are the primary site for this relationship, but they often obscure the conflicts inherent in maintaining and displaying captive wild animals. In this series, I photographed the interiors of animal enclosures at 12 different zoos across the U.S and Europe. These images invite the viewer to question the role of these constructed habitats, and explore the motivations behind collecting, preserving, and controlling the natural world.
