Alex represents a growing population of queer youth, which as a result of the increasing visibility of queer culture in our society "come out" at an earlier age. Unfortunately a high percentage of these youth are rejected by their families and find themselves homeless. Queer homeless youth are subject to a higher rates of violence, mental health issues, substance abuse, etc. compared with similar straight homeless youth. Alex's story is no different. After leaving home when she was an adolescent she was dependent on New York City's public assistance programs and homeless shelter system for a period of 5 years. Recently though her life has changed drastically in that she is no longer dependent on assistance programs, has embarked on a new career path, found stability in a foster family of close knit friends and ultimately is making her life her own.
